Hugo Lloris backs Heung-min Son as Tottenham struggles continue: ‘He’s a top player with a top mentality’

Tottenham captain Hugo Lloris says there is no doubt that Heung-min Son will come good soon despite another subdued outing against West Ham on Wednesday.

Son played his part in Spurs’ goal in the 1-1 draw at the London Stadium when Thilo Kehrer turned into his own net under pressure from the South Korean.

But last season’s Golden Boot winner cut a frustrated figure again, and only showed one flash of his best when he sent a deflected shot over the crossbar.

Son has now failed to score in Spurs’ first five matches of the campaign but Lloris is not concerned about his team-mate’s form.

Asked if Son was off the pace, Lloris said: “No, he’s still looking for his first goal, he’s an offensive player.

“They need the confidence and the confidence they get only by scoring goals. We cannot forget the work he has done. He’s completely involved. Without the ball he’s making a lot of runs to help the defence and offensively it’s going to come for sure because he’s a top player with a top mentality. Also it’s a busy period and we need to make sure everybody is ready to help the team.”

Kehrer’s goal put Spurs in control but they squandered their position of strength in a sluggish start to the second half and Tomas Soucek equalised on 55 minutes.

Lloris, who celebrated 10 years as a Spurs player on Wednesday, had no time for reflecting on the anniversary and was left frustrated by his side’s second half.

“It’s difficult for me to think about [my anniversary] after the game,” he said. “Obviously I’m very happy to reach 10 years but I’m more focused on today and Saturday [against Fulham].

“There is a mix of feelings after that game. If we look on the positive side, we’re still unbeaten. We come here, a difficult place to deal with, a place we lost in the last two seasons.

“And then when you look at today’s game, the way we conceded is frustrating. From the throw-in, we had to switch on quicker, the first ten minutes of the second half the tempo was a bit strange.

“And we know that if we want to do better than the last few seasons it’s all about details, to keep the focus very high.

“We’re still unbeaten. To get one point here is good, it’s not bad even if our expectation is to come here to win. I believe in the first half if we pushed a bit more, we controlled so well the game, if we pushed a bit more we could have pushed to get a second goal.

“But it’s part of the game. The season is very long and also we have to learn from the past. When you can’t win, like today in the second half at 1-1, you don’t lose. It’s still one point.

“In the second half they pressed higher and we could have managed the ball better, especially we could have used the space better in behind their defence. Because when you play from the back you try to attack them as much as you can and in two or three passes you try to go forward.

“Again, the opponent deserves credit. They’re a tough opponent and it’s a tough place to deal with.

“We cannot forget also that they had one or two chances to score. If we lose this game, it makes things very bad so let’s continue this positive run.
