Hughes' new job at Plymouth, Argentine swoop for Sheffield Wednesday star – League One headlines

A promotion for former Bristol Rovers defender Mark Hughes at Plymouth Argyle leads the latest League One headlines, as the former Accrington Stanley man takes the next step in his coaching career.

The transfer market is hotting up in the third tier, too, including a potential move to South America for one of Sheffield Wednesday's prized assets.

Deals cannot officially be completed until next month, but that is not holding clubs back from making moves ahead of pre-season. Here are the latest headlines from around League One on May 25...

Hughes lands new role at Plymouth

Mark Hughes called time on his playing days in January after an injury-hit stint with the Gas, joining the coaching staff of friend Steven Schumacher at Plymouth Argyle.

And the 35-year-old has now been promoted to assistant manager, replacing Keith Downing who has stepped down due to family commitments. Hughes is studying for his UEFA A Licence and is due to graduate next season.

“I have a long way to go in my coaching career, but this is the perfect club to help me with my journey," Hughes told Plymouth Live.

“The players, coaching staff and supporters have helped me settle into the area and get over the transition from playing to coaching. “It’s a proper football club and one I’ve felt like I have been at for more time than I actually have.

Argentine interest in Sheffield Wednesday star

Sheffield Wednesday attacking midfielder Josh Windass is a surprise transfer target for Argentine Primera División club Atlético Talleres.

On the face of it, it has the makings of a strange transfer but Windass worked with Talleres boss Pedro Caixinha in his time in the Scottish Premiership at Rangers.

The 28-year-old is entering the final year of his contract at Hillsborough, but Yorkshire Live reports the Owls do not want to lose him this summer.

Speaking on Argentine football radio show ¿Cómo te va?, Talleres president Andrés Fassi said: “We are in talks with an English player, who Pedro already had in Europe as a player, he wants to come and live the experience of Argentine football. It is part of the negotiations that we will do in Buenos Aires. The footballer is Josh Windass.”

Sunderland set to release quartet

Sunderland's spell in League One is at an end after their play-off final win on Saturday, but they are set to release four senior players in the coming days according to reports.

Former Republic of Ireland international Aiden McGeady is the headline departure, according to The Sun's Alan Nixon, who reports defenders Jordan Willis and Arbenit Xhemajli, plus goalkeeper Lee Burge, will leave the Stadium of Light this summer.

McGeady, aged 36, had spells with Celtic, Everton and Spartak Moscow earlier in his career, has spent five seasons on Wearside, scoring 36 goals in 149 appearances, but the 36-year-old only appeared in 14 League One games this season.

Brown looking north of the border

Fleetwood Town manager Scott Brown is looking to his homeland for his first signing, Football Scotland reports.

With the Cod Army escaping relegation on goal difference before Brown's arrival, reinforcements are required, and he is keen to add defender Shaun Rooney to his squad.

The 25-year-old full-back has been a key player for St Johnstone, scoring four times over the course of the season as they secured their Scottish Premiership status in the play-off against Inverness Caledonian Thistle.
