Huge smart meter change could ‘lower energy bills’ as Ofgem given new powers next month

A huge shake-up to the way smart meters work will kick off in just over three weeks - and it could lower your energy bill.

The energy regulator Ofgem is being given new powers from May, allowing it to change the way smart meters operate by 2025.

At the moment, information about your energy usage can be sent once a month at default - but Ofgem wants to change this so that data is sent to suppliers every 30 minutes.
