Las Vegas Strip Sphere brings back popular rock band residency

Sphere Entertainment's Sphere Las Vegas debuted with superstar rock band U2's 40-show U2/UV Achtung Baby Live at the Sphere residency in September 2023 and brought the first of many spectacular technological presentations to the new venue's stage.

The Sphere continued to book superstar entertainers in the 18,600-seat venue, which can hold a 20,000 standing capacity, after U2 completed its residency. The Sphere welcomed jam band Phish for a short engagement with four shows in April, and followed those shows with Grateful Dead spinoff band Dead & Company, which scheduled 30 shows at the Las Vegas Sphere from May 16 through Aug. 10, 2024.

U2 will likely record more music and embark on more concert tours, but the success of its Sphere residency is likely to prompt the band to sign on for another residency in the next few years.

Phish continues touring and has booked a four-night New Year's Eve holiday engagement Dec. 28-31, 2024, at New York's Madison Square Garden. A ticket request period ends Oct. 7, Noon, Eastern time at Phish.com. Don't be surprised if Phish someday plays another limited engagement at the Sphere.

Dead & Company completed its final concert tour at Oracle Park in San Francisco on July 16, 2023, and is not expected to tour again, but a return to the Sphere after a successful 30-show residency is expected by many.

The Eagles, which has been performing farewell tours since its "Farewell 1 Tour" in 2003, said it wrapped up its touring career with a show on its "Long Goodbye" tour in the Netherlands on June 15, 2024.

The band's fans have heard about the band's touring retirement plans for over 20 years and many are skeptical about whether the band is no longer touring.

Fans have good reason to question whether the band will ever really retire, as the band's late singer/guitarist Glenn Frey rejected the notion that they were retiring on Farewell 1, during a 2005 show in Sacramento, by saying, "If you're payin', we're playin'."
