Huge military plane flies low over Leeds 'scaring the life' out of people

This huge military aircraft created a stir as it roared over Leeds and Wakefield today.

The Airbus A400M is a military transport aircraft capable of carrying a 37-tonne payload over 2,000 nautical miles and can operate at altitudes up to 40,000ft.

The impressive photo below was taken by Dale Myers as the Airbus cruised at around 3,500ft over Stanley, Wakefield.

Dale said: "It is an Airbus A400M RAF ZM418 - call sign Ascot. The photo was taken in Stanley, Wakefield. It came through at 3,500ft."

The Airbus A400M is operated by the Royal Air Force. On its website, the RAF says: "It will accommodate as many as 116 fully-equipped troops; vehicles; helicopters, including a Chinook; mixed loads, including nine aircraft pallets and 54 passengers, or combinations of vehicles, pallets and personnel, up to a payload of 37 tonnes."

The £160m plane has been spotted over Leeds on previous occasions. It takes part in training around Leeds Bradford Airport including refuelling exercises.

As it roared over Leeds today, people took to social media.

One man said: "Scared the life out of me."
