A huge fire has broken out in Edinburgh city centre this evening.
Emergency services raced to the South Bridge area in the Old Town after the alarm was raised shortly before 6.30pm on Saturday. Pictures taken from the scene, and shared with Edinburgh Live, showed the huge emergency response with multiple fire engines, ambulances and police vehicles in attendance.
Another image showed a huge plume of black smoke billowing out of a window of a property on the street. It's understood the fire is affecting a first floor flat in a five storey building above the PDSA charity shop on South Bridge.
The extent of the fire or if there have been any casualties is not known at this time.
A resident who was at the scene said: "The whole of south bridge is closed and there are about eight fire engines plus dozens of police and ambulances."
Another added: "It is a big fire. Smoke was billowing from the building above the PDSA shop before fire, police and ambulance vehicles arrived in South Bridge. I hope everyone is okay."
It's understood that both South Bridge and North Bridge were blocked off to traffic while fire crews battled the blaze.
A Scottish Fire and Rescue Service spokesperson said: “We were alerted at 6.29pm on Saturday June 3 to reports of a flat on fire in South Bridge, Edinburgh.
“Operations control mobilised six appliances to a first floor flat in a five storey building. Crews remain in attendance.”
