Huge emergency response after car found 'well alight' in river as water search teams scrambled

A huge emergency response was prompted after a car was found 'well alight' in the River Irk in north Manchester.

Fire crews, police, and paramedics descended on Hendham Vale in the Harpurhey area after reports of a vehicle fire. Crews found a car engulfed by flames in the water.

Greater Manchester Fire Service confirmed three crews, as well as a technical rescue unit were deployed to the scene to extinguish the fire, shortly before 11pm on Saturday (17 June).

Water operatives were then scrambled to the area to search the water for any casualties. No injuries are believed to have been reported.

Greater Manchester Police confirmed an investigation has been launched, with enquiries said to be ongoing. No arrests have been made.

Footage taken from Hendham Vale shows a large number of emergency vehicles, including multiple fire crews, police and paramedics from North West Ambulance Service.

A spokesperson for Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue Service (GMFRS) said: "Just before 11pm on Saturday 17 June, fire crews were called to a vehicle fire near Hendham Vale, Manchester.

"Three fire engines from Moss Side, Salford and Eccles stations, as well as the technical rescue unit from Ashton, quickly attended the incident. A car in the nearby River Irk was well alight on fire crews’ arrival.

"Firefighters extinguished the fire from the roadway and water operatives searched the river and surrounding area to check there were no persons in danger.

"Crews then helped make the area safe before handing the scene over to colleagues from Greater Manchester Police."

A spokesperson for GMP said: "Police were called to reports of damage to a vehicle near Hendham Vale just after 10pm last night (Saturday 17 June 2023).

"The vehicle was set alight and colleagues from Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue Service extinguished the blaze. Officers are currently investigating the circumstances and enquiries are ongoing."
