Kieran Trippier is set for a spell on the sidelines after suffering a broken bone in his foot during the 1-0 win over Aston Villa.
Results of a scan show that damage was suffered in Trippier’s left foot and is set to miss the next few matches, starting with the trip to West Ham on Saturday.
Newcastle were dealt the hammer blow at the start of the second half when Trippier was stamped on by an opponent.
Eddie Howe said after the game: "Trippier got stamped on and he couldn’t continue with a problem on the top of his foot."
Howe also added that he hoped there would be no break in his foot but his worst fears have been confirmed.
Here is how Newcastle fans have been reacting to the major blow.
@_ConorElliott: “Kieran Trippier out injured. Gutted. His influence within the club is massive. He lifts the players around him. A player that we need. This just means Javier Manquillo needs to step up and put in performances in his place.”
@ChrisBlack10: “Gutted about this, so much more to this team than just an outstanding full back.”
@CultofRon: “Big blow to hear Trippier has broken a bone in his foot, but hopefully the whole group has turned a corner and will finish the season strongly.”
@GeordieSure: “I hope we haven’t become over-reliant on Trippier. The West Ham result will be a true indicator of how much we’ve improved, (if at all). Speedy recovery, Tripps!”
@kingcal91: “Finally got out of the drop zone with a bit of breathing space and the main man is sidelined. Never a moment to relax for #NUFC.”
@Michael97706463: “Tripps is a huge blow. With that said I think Murphy can do a decent job in there, we are more progressive now and the new philosophy will be helpful. He also delivers a ball well. It’s a plaster on a crack but the best plaster we have.”
@danjpeg: “A massive blow losing Trippier but we’re a different team now. Can’t let one injury derail us. Krafth did well yesterday when he came on and was excellent against Man United and Manquillo isn’t too bad. Got to stay behind the team. We’ll have Targett back for Saturday too.”
@davidpick1987: “Get well soon Kieran – you’ll be missed hugely on the pitch but your influence will still be felt throughout the team and it’s on your teammates now to perform close to your standards.”
@SuperSchar: “Massive loss, the others need to step up now, hopefully Manquillo isn’t too bad of an injury! Speedy recovery Trippier that’s so unlucky.”
@ChileanToon: “We can’t have good news without an instant slap in the face. KT has been the pivotal player of our team since he laced up for us; I wish him a speedy recovery. It’s going to be an uphill battle without him.”
