Residents evacuated after huge blaze in Rutherglen as fire crews battle to bring flames under control

Residents in flats near a huge building blaze in Rutherglen have been evacuated as fire crews attempt to bring the flames under control.

People in surrounding properties have also been told to keep their windows and doors closed after emergency services raced to King Street at around 11.20pm last night. The Scottish Fire and Rescue Service received 26 calls about the burning building from concerned locals.

Flames and black smoke could be seen billowing over the sky as seven fire engines and two high-reach appliances darted to the commercial building, which is located next to a petrol station.

Glasgow Live reports the building on fire is allegedly the Royal Burgh House, with one witness claiming that the 'roof of the building has collapsed in'

Police Scotland confirmed the road had been closed following the fire at around midnight.

King Street remains closed in both directions and Farmeloan Road is also closed to the junction with Alleysbank Road.

A Scottish Fire and Rescue Service spokesperson said: “A Scottish Fire and Rescue Service spokesperson said: “We were alerted at 11.18pm on Thursday, October 13 to reports of a fire affecting a building at King Street, Rutherglen."

“Operations Control mobilised seven fire appliances and two height vehicles to the area where approximately 50 firefighters worked to extinguish the fire.

“There were no reported casualties and crews have now left the scene."
