Huge Ayrshire fireworks display 'unsustainable' after event loses thousands of pounds

Kilwinning fireworks' boss has warned that the event is not sustainable after the annual spectacular lost thousands of pounds on at the weekend.

Around 10,000 people from across Ayrshire flocked to the pyrotechnic show at McGavin park on Friday where a low noise show for young kids and a main display entertained the masses.

Believed to be the biggest fireworks show in Ayrshire, the whole event relies on donations and isn't ticketed but a devastating shortfall of £2,500 this year could see organisers scale back future events

Kilwinning Community Events chief Donald Reid said: "If we could get £2,500 in donations we'd break even. We appreciate the cost-of-living crisis is affecting everyone right now but the show isn't sustainable if people aren't prepared to donate.

"The last thing we want to do is start charging for entry because it creates a bottleneck and restricts the folk attending. Ayr charges £8 per adult/ £22 per family, can folk afford that? Probably not.

"We need to look at the bigger picture. We are looking at doing more fundraising and trying to source more grants and sponsors but the way we'll have to go is by cutting the show back to basics.

"The committee is of the opinion we'll see our 10th firework display and then we'll have a think about it. We'll cut back the firework display, length of time and what we do for the 10th show and then we'll have a review."

Organisers are now calling for more volunteers and online donations to those who want to help.

He added: "We're desperately looking for volunteers on the night, this year was especially apparent, we rattled the buckets as best we could but we need more to help on the night. We need to grow our team of volunteers on event days and anyone who would like to volunteer please see our Facebook page, this will help ensure we continue to deliver events like Picnic in the Park and the Fireworks.

"Many people weren't able to donate on the night because we don't have card readers on hand.

"We have now uploaded the displays to our Facebook page and we still very much hope folks will consider donating to the event costs.

"We are grateful to everyone who attended and contributed."
