Huge £30m Stepping Hill Hospital transformation given green light - including this major change to A&E and children's care

A multi-million pound transformation of Stepping Hill Hospital has been given the go-ahead. Plans for the new emergency and urgent care campus for the Stockport hospital have now been approved.

The £30 million project will see the A&E and urgent care services for tens of thousands of people in the borough 'significantly improved', according to hospital design bosses. The investment will bring a 'major new facility' to make Stepping Hill's A&E unit into a 'state-of-the-art' and 'more efficient' treatment centre.

Work on the extension, which will increase the size of the current clinical area by more than 300 square metres, is due to start on site this year. The building work will include new assessment, treatment and consultation areas for vital emergency and care services - as well as a new children’s emergency department, enhanced mental health care, and medical same-day emergency care.

The main campus frontage will also be extended to accommodate an enlarged ambulance and patient reception area while new hard landscaping, tree planting and outdoor seating will be carried out to provide exterior improvements, say the design team behind the plans.

Imogen Zulver, senior planner at the Manchester office of Lichfields, who secured planning permission on behalf of Stockport NHS Foundation Trust, said the project will provide much needed community healthcare facilities.

She said: “We have worked closely with the Trust and the local council to deliver this project. The new campus opens a fresh chapter for quality healthcare provision in the South Manchester area, which has been designed to centre around patients’ needs and provide a state-of-the art facility that will benefit the community for decades to come.”

Karen James OBE, chief executive at Stockport NHS Foundation Trust, has said previously: “These new facilities will help us to provide the safe, good quality care which these patients need.”
