Huge 1,300ft golden cube in Saudi Arabia to be one of largest structures in world

Saudi Arabia is set to build a 1,300ft-high golden cube in its capital city which will be one of the largest built structures in the world.

The Mukaab landmark will form part of plans to develop the "world's largest modern downtown".

Part of the wider New Murabba development, the construction is described as the "world's first immersive destination", offering an experience created by digital and virtual technology with the latest holographics.

There will be a tower atop a spiral base and it will house two million sqm of floor space that will become a premium hospitality destination with retail, cultural and tourist attractions, along with residential and hotel units, commercial spaces, and recreational facilities.

His Royal Highness Crown Prince Mohammad bin Salman bin Abdulaziz, Prime Minister and Chairman of the New Murabba Development Company (NMDC) announced the scheme for the city's future development in line with Saudi Vision 2030.

Saudi Vision 2030 is a strategic framework to reduce the country's dependence on oil, diversify its economy, and develop public service sectors such as health, education, infrastructure, recreation, and tourism.

Developers say the area would boast a unique living, working and entertainment experience within a 15-minute walking radius, its own internal transport system, as well as only being 20 minutes drive from the airport.

The scheme will offer more than 25 million sqm of floor area, featuring more than 104,000 residential units, 9,000 hotel rooms, and more than 980,000 sqm of retail space.

There will also be 1.4 million sqm of office space, 620,000 sqm of leisure assets, and 1.8 million sqm of space dedicated to community facilities.

In July, plans to build two parallel, mirrored buildings nearly 500 metres tall and 75 miles wide were revealed.

The $1 trillion skyscrapers will be made of mirrored glass that will stretch across its desert and stand taller than the Empire State Building.

The Wall Street Journal unveiled confidential planning documents that laid out details for the "Mirror Line," which will become the world's tallest building if successfully constructed.

Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman plans to construct a zero-carbon city on a 170km line and the building will become the epicentre of the new desert city called the Neom - which will be around the size of Massachusetts.

Prince bin Salman said he wanted his country to house a construction project as iconic and timeless as the Pyramids of Egypt.

The two buildings will be connected via walkways, and a high-speed train will run underneath them.
