Hucknall woman grew hair for three years for 'lifechanging' donation to children's wig charity

A Hucknall woman had been growing her hair for three years so she could donate it to charity. Kayte Baxter from Hucknall, living in Shepshed, cut 14 inches off her hair for the Little Princesses Trust.

The charity use hair donations to turn into wigs for children with cancer to help restore their confidence and identity. Kayte, 40, set up a fundraiser alongside her colleague Nabila, who had previously cut her hair.

It costs £550 to create real hair wigs but the pair raised 410% more than planned. £2,260 has been raised so far and Kayte's employer Captial One will match the donations.

Kayte's hairdressers, Arena Hair in Hucknall shared a post on Facebook from the charity at the start of the pandemic, asking if people would consider letting their hair grow since hairdressers were shut.

Kayte said: "I thought what a lovely idea. It would be such a lovely thing to do, to grow my hair and donate it to a young child or young adult whose lost hair due to usually quite a serious illness. I love my hair it is really long and really thick. It is a big thing for me to have it cut off but I am really looking forward to giving that to someone."

Kayte had been reading testimonials about children who have already received real hair wigs. She said: "I think reading about their stories and the loss of their identity, it is not just about dealing with a terrible illness. It is a loss of identity people feel when they lose their hair. I think to receive a real hair wig, is lifechanging for people who are going through such a terrible period in their lives."

She added: "I really really hope my hair is made into a beautiful wig and makes life just a bit brighter for somebody who is going through such a terrible ordeal."

When asked how donated her hair has made her feel, Kayte said: "So proud, just so unbelievably proud and like I would just go on to do it again. Not everyone can grow hair like I can so I just hope it can bring someone happiness."
