Families living with sickle cell disease may soon find specialized care closer to home after the Health Resources and Services Administration expanded its regional care networks from five regions to seven. The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services announced seven awards on October 20 under the new Sickle Cell Disease Regional Care Excellence, or SoRCE, Program.
Each award creates a Regional Coordinating Hub that partners with at least three local "spokes." Every spoke pairs a clinical center with at least one community-based organization, linking medical expertise with groups families already know.
