Howe quizzed over Saint-Maximin's Newcastle future as star sends statement at Chelsea

It remains to be seen if Allan Saint-Maximin has played his final game in a black and white shirt - but the Newcastle United man showed he still has a part to play as he impressed in the 1-1 draw against Chelsea.

Newcastle's best opportunities of the Stamford Bridge clash came through the Frenchman, who started from the outset in the season finale. Saint-Maximin posted a cryptic message on his social media this week, with some of the Magpies' fanbase believing he could be saying farewell to St James' Park this summer.

“Time passes, memories fade, feelings change, people leave us, but the heart never forgets. Making history," Saint-Maximin wrote, alongside a photograph of his children on the pitch at St James' Park.

Newcastle boss Eddie Howe was quizzed on Saint-Maximin's future after the Chelsea draw and admitted that decision would lay solely at the door of the 26-year-old in the coming months.

“That will be dictated by Maxi himself," Howe responded. "He has so much ability and he’s such an important player for us when he’s at his very best fitness-wise. He’s unique, there’s no one like him in the Premier League.

“You saw he’s a huge transitional threat today, his end product was there so really pleased. We just hope he comes back really fit and ready to do well in what is a massive season for him personally.”

Saint-Maximin started the campaign in blistering form but struggled with injuries as the campaign went on. The winger has shown flashes of his best but has ultimately struggled to put a run of games together.

Saint-Maximin also now has competition on Tyneside, with himself, Anthony Gordon, Elliot Anderson and Joelinton all fighting for one spot on the left of Newcastle's attack.
