How WSL title race is shaping up with Man Utd, Chelsea Man City and Arsenal chasing glory

This WSL season continues to be the most absorbing in recent memory.

A four-way title race has gone to the final month of the campaign, but following the first week of May the picture is starting to look a little clearer. The big news on Sunday was Man City's chances effectively being ended.

Gareth Taylor's team were left stunned by a 2-1 defeat at Liverpool at Prenton Park, following Missy Bo Kearns' second-half winner. That leaves them six points adrift of local rivals Man Utd, who still sit top following a 3-0 win at home to lowly Tottenham.

But Chelsea and Arsenal can still catch Marc Skinner's team after wins this Coronation weekend over Everton and Brighton respectively.

And the title isn't the only storyline worth following at the top of the table, with only the top three qualifying for next season's UEFA Women's Champions League, the scramble for Europe is very much on.

Here's how the contenders stand and where the title race will be decided.

Man Utd - 1st, 50 points

All season we have waited for Man Utd to hit a sticky patch at the crunch point of the campaign, just as they did last season. But Marc Skinner's side are a different beast this time around, although they are still chasing a first major domestic trophy.

They are now just three games from a historic league and cup double following Sunday's win over Spurs, their fifth win in a row in the league. Leah Galton and Alessia Russo settled any nerves for the hosts and a Nikita Parris strike ensured it was a comfortable win.

After the small matter of the FA Cup final against Chelsea at Wembley next Sunday, United have the small matter of a Manchester derby for their final home league game of the season. They follow that up with a trip to Liverpool on the final day. Win both and they would be difficult to catch, although failure to take maximum points could see them narrowly miss out.

Chelsea - 2nd, 46 points

Wins over both Merseyside clubs have restored Chelsea's title charge following their European exit. Both wins came in different circumstances, they were poor against Liverpool but a late Sam Kerr goal got them over the line.

But against Everton they ran riot with a 7-0 victory seeing them move to within four points of United. Chelsea may be second in the table, but the title is actually in their hands.

Win all their remaining games and they will be champions. Two in particular are tricky, Leicester come to Kingsmeadow on Wednesday and are fighting for their lives to avoid relegation.

Arsenal then visit on May 21, the team who beat them in the Conti Cup final and outplayed them in the reverse league fixture, which ended 1-1. If they do get through those two tricky fixtures, the Blues' other two outstanding fixtures, against West Ham and Reading, shouldn't prove too much of a problem.

Man City - 3rd, 44 points

City have made a brave effort to even be competing for the title going into the final month of the season, considering they were without a point following their opening two league games of the season. A 15-game unbeaten run then put them right back in contention, but their challenge is essentially over following that narrow defeat away to Liverpool.

Along with Sunday's loss, dropped points at home to Aston Villa back in February could end up costing them a European place, as well as the league. In theory, City could still join United on 50 points after the final day on May 27.

To do so they would need to win their remaining two games, including the Manchester derby on May 21. But even if City do that and United and Chelsea slip-up elsewhere, their inferior goal difference means the title is only possible purely in a mathematical sense. The realistic chance of becoming champions ended at Prenton Park.

Taylor and his team will at least hope to win both remaining games and sneak into the top three, ensuring a return to the Champions League next season.

Arsenal - 4th, 41 points

The title may be too much of an ask for Arsenal. Their narrow defeat to Man Utd a few weeks back appears to have left them with too steep a mountain to climb and with not enough time to do it.

But stranger things have happened in football. The Gunners have games in hand against Brighton and Everton over the next ten days, meaning they will have played twice before United are next in action in the WSL.

Win both and they will only be three points behind. Chelsea will be a key fixture, but Jonas Eidevall's team have shown that on their day they can cause the title holders big problems. Even if finishing top proves out of reach, Arsenal will be desperate to pick up maximum points to finish in the top three and secure Champions League football.

WSL top four Prediction:

1. Man Utd - 56 points

2. Chelsea - 54 points

3. Arsenal - 51 points

4. Man City - 47 points
