You need to see the full “Worm Moon” rise this week. The final full Moon of winter in the northern hemisphere, with the spring equinox just a few days away its beautiful orangey rise symbolically signifies warmer temperatures to come.

Also called the Crow Moon, the Crust Moon, the Sap Moon and the Chaste Moon, our satellite will turn full at 07:17 UTC on Friday, March 18, 2022, depending on where you are in the world.

However, when to se it rise this month isn’t as simple as it seems, with the best views on Thursday, March 17, 2022 for many.

Here’s everything you need to know and the “Worm Moon,” including when best to see it appear on your eastern horizon:

When is the full ‘Worm Moon?’

The Moon will be full at 07:17 UTC on Friday, March 18, 2022 while in the constellation of Virgo. However, our satellite’s point of 100% illumination is definitely not the best time to see it.

When to see the full ‘Worm Moon’

You want to see the “Worm Moon” not at its brightest, but at moonrise on the date of the full Moon because that’s when it looks a pale and entrancing shade of orange as it appears from below the horizon. However, this month it’s a little more complicated than that.

The perfect scenario for watching a moonrise is when there’s a short period between sunset in the west and moonrise in the east. That way we can watch the full “Worm Moon” appear on the eastern horizon while there’s still some light left. That’s the “wow” moment we all want, but this month it can mean coming outside the night before.

For New York, the best time to watch be be moonrise at 6:32 p.m. EST on Thursday, March 18, 2022. Sunset is at 7.04 p.m. EDT. So the Moon will appear on the horizon a little too early for a really dramatic moonrise, but that’s tough luck for the east coast of the US. The moment of full Moon is at 02: 19 a.m. EDT on Friday, March 18, 2022. It will also be worth taking a look at 7:41 p.m. EDT on the Friday, though the sun will have set at 7:05 p.m. EDT.

In Los Angeles it will be best to watch the moonrise on Thursday, March 17, 2022 when the timings are kinder; moonrise is at 6:42 p.m. PDT and sunset is at 7:02 p.m.—by the time our satellite risen properly the Sun should be out of the way. The moment of full Moon is a few hours later at 11: 19 p.m. PDT.

In London the best views of the rising “Worm Moon” can be had on Friday, March 18, 2022 when the Sun sets at 6:09 p.m. GMT before moonrise at 6:28 p.m. GMT. Full Moon actually occurs very early that day at 7:19 a .m GMT.

How to see the full ‘Worm Moon’ from home

Observe from somewhere that has a good view low to the eastern horizon (use the compass app on a smartphone to determine where east is). An east-facing third floor window is good—somewhere with some height and a lack of obstructions.

You’ll also need to be patient. The full Moon will rise and will be visible if the skies are clear, but it will take a little longer to appear than you might expect.

When is the next full Moon?

The next full Moon is the full “Pink Moon,” which will occur on Sunday, April 16, 2022. It will be the first full Moon of spring 2022.

Wishing you clear skies and wide eyes.
