Australian Jack Della Maddalena will have Alex Volkanovski's words of wisdom in the back of his mind when fighting UFC legend Islam Makhachev in their blockbuster title showdown in New York.
In what is being billed as one of the biggest UFC fights of the year, former lightweight ruler Makhachev will attempt to become a two-division champion by stripping Della Maddalena of his welterweight belt in their clash at Madison Square Garden on Saturday night (Sunday AEDT).
The step up from the 70.3kg lightweight division to the 77.1kg welterweight is a big risk for Makhachev (27-1), but one the 34-year-old is willing to take in his bid for glory.
As for Della Maddalena (18-2), the UFC 322 main event represents a golden chance to prove his upset victory over Belal Muhammad in May to win the welterweight belt was no flash in the pan.
