Whether it's your first time experiencing Hideaki Anno's classic anime, or your 50th rewatch, the question of how to watch Neon Genesis Evangelion isn't exactly straightforward. While the original run is 26-episodes of near perfection, after this things start to get a little more complicated with a series of re-imaginings, remakes, and quasi-sequels released over the years.
A deconstruction of the mecha genre, Neon Genesis Evangelion is set 15 years after a cataclysmic event involving monstrous 'Angels' in the futuristic fortified city of Tokyo-3. Following teenager Shinji Ikari, whose father summons him to pilot a giant biomechanical mecha (aka Evangelion) to fight and destroy Angels, it is widely considered one of the greatest anime of all time. The original series was followed by the End of Evangelion movie, and then came the 'Rebuild' entries.
