It is well documented how United underperformed in the domestic cup competitions last season, but by virtue of qualifying for the Champions League, they have already bettered their showing in the Carabao Cup when they crashed out on penalties to Grimsby in the second round.

Michael Carrick’s side, who last lifted this trophy in 2023, go into the game at Old Trafford hoping to bounce back from a controversial defeat in the Manchester derby at the weekend.
That result compounded a mix start to the campaign for Man Utd, winning just two of five games across all competitions - at home to promoted Ipswich and Champions League debutants Sabah.
Brighton, meanwhile, should be in good spirits after thumping Coventry 5-0 on Sunday to continue their solid start to the season in which their only loss so far was a narrow one away at Chelsea.
An interesting sub-plot to today’s clash is that Brighton knocked United out of the FA Cup back in January and do have a good recent record at the ‘Theatre of Dreams’.
