Brookside is returning to our screens through streaming service STV Player, which is available via Sky Q.
The Liverpool-based soap opera, set in a Croxteth cul-de-sac, ran for 21 years from 1982 to 2003 on Channel 4. It was announced yesterday that the entire series would be available to stream to the delight of many fans.
Brookside was a popular show in its late 1980s heyday. It was renowned for covering social issues many dramas had failed to tackle and set a number of firsts in British television. These included the first openly gay character in a British TV series, the first showing of a lesbian kiss pre-watershed and the first ever coverage of dyslexia in a soap.

Iconic cast members included scouse actors Ricky Tomlinson as Bobby Grant and Sue Johnston as Sheila Grant, who went on to star as a couple again in the much-loved sitcom The Royle Family. However, the show drew some criticism during its run due to the overuse of sensationalised storylines and production issues such as dialogue echoing.
