What the Law Actually Requires
The Unorganised Workers' Social Security Act, 2008 covers domestic workers as a category, and several states have gone further with their own domestic workers welfare boards. Karnataka, Tamil Nadu, Kerala, Maharashtra, and Andhra Pradesh have state-level boards that allow domestic workers to register and access benefits including life insurance, accident cover, and maternity assistance. As an employer, your first step is to check whether your state has an active board and register your worker there. The registration fee is nominal and the process takes one visit or, in some states, an online form.
