The soaring price of milk, along with the likes of cheese and eggs, had pushed food inflation to its highest level for 14 years. Coupled with falling fuel prices, shoppers could now face spending more on pints of milk than filling up their car, with some retailers charging more per litre for the drink.
The average price per pint of milk has risen by two-thirds in the past year - to 86p (£1.50 a litre). Some smaller branches of the bigger retailers have been spotted selling single pints for as much as £1.05, slightly under £1.85 a litre.
While it will generally be cheaper to buy milk in bigger quantities, this is impractical for many people living alone. On-demand grocery delivery service Getir, a Turkish start-up founded in 2015, is offering a free bottle of milk delivered to your door when you spend a minimum of £20.
