How to Fish, the newest viral friendslop game, sells 1 million copies in two days

A new viral indie friendslop title has hit the scene. How to Fish, a fishing simulator that utilizes both guns and gambling, has already sold over a million copies in just two days.

The friendslop genre – co-op indie games with wacky premises and physics-based gameplay – has no shortage of new titles. Golf, walking, and general ruthless capitalism have all featured in massively popular indie games of late, with fishing the latest addition.

How to Fish has a very simple premise. Up to four players are trapped together on a small island, upon which they must learn to fish, sell their catches (or gamble them for money), explore more islands, and take on fishy bosses.

What makes How to Fish special is its unique mixture of fishing and ridiculous cartoon violence. Players can aggressively stab fish, hit trick shots to drop birds right out of the sky, and annihilate fish with snipers the second they leave the sea. Hitting shots against the local wildlife earns more cash, which in turn earns better weaponry.

Catching fish and birds is only one part of the game, as then players can choose to either sell their loot for cash or leave it to Lady Luck on the roulette table.

With its over-the-top fishy violence, low price, and just a dash of gambling, How to Fish has become an instant success practically over night. As announced by the developers via their Steam page, the game has already sold a million copies just two days after its Aug. 20 release date.

The player count numbers via Steam Charts have been impressive as well, with an all-time peak (as of the publishing of this article) of 266,896 players. What could be helping How to Fish along in its popularity is the incredibly low price of $7.99 USD, with an extra-low sale price of $4.95 USD.

Dazed Games, the developers behind How to Fish, have promised more bug fixes and content in the future, though details are scarce considering they only wrote, “Yes, we’ll be adding more content! Yes, we’ll be fixing bugs!”
