The grand final of the Eurovision song contest hit our screens last night, broadcasting live from Liverpool to millions all over the world.
And as it was being hosted in the UK, there was a great deal of pressure on our entry - 25-year-old pop singer Mae Muller who took to the stage with her catchy banger I Wrote A Song.
Mae sang from a raised platform wearing a slim, black outfit, accompanied by four dancers in sheer tops, and surprised the audience with a rapped section. But fans were disappointed when the results were not in the UK's favour.
Manchester Evening News reports that the UK was riding high following Sam Ryder's heroic efforts in 2022 when he finished in second place to Ukraine with an impressive 466 points. The Space Man himself picked up 283 points in the jury vote. But Ukraine won over 400 in the public vote to secure a huge 631 points and win the title.
And this year, Mae finished in 25th place with a total 24. She received a total of nine points in the public vote which results in the crowd booing as the results were announced in the arena.
The UK jury awarded its “douze points”, 12 points, to Loreen from Sweden, with Catherine Tate reading the result from inside the M&S Bank Arena in Liverpool.
At the end of the jury vote results, Loreen led with 340 with Israel’s Noa Kirel in second with 177 and Italy’s Marco Mengoni close behind in third with 176.
After the show, Mae tweeted that it "wasn't the result she had hoped for" but she was still thankful that she had been able to represent the UK in the singing contest.
She said: "i just want to say thank u x i know i joke a lot but we really put our all into the last few months, not the result we hoped for but so proud of everyone & what we achieved on this journey. Congrats to all the countries, I’ll never forget this journey and I love you all."
