Twenty clubs, 380 matches and three places at the bottom that nobody wants. The Premier League looks simple from the outside, but the rules behind the table decide more than most fans realise: who lifts the trophy, who goes down, and who plays in Europe next year.
This guide explains how the Premier League works from start to finish. It covers the 38-game season, how ties on points are settled, the promotion and relegation system (which changes in 2026-27), and how clubs earn a place in European competition.
How does a Premier League season work?
Every club plays the other 19 twice, once at home and once away. That gives each team 38 matches and the league 380 in total, according to the Premier League. A win earns 3 points, a draw 1 and a defeat 0, and the club with the most points after 38 games is champion. If you want the full reasoning behind the number, our guide to why a Premier League season has 38 games walks through it and compares other leagues.
The real drama starts when two clubs finish level. Under Rule C.17 of the Premier League Handbook, ties are broken in this order:
- Goal difference across the season
- Goals scored across the season
- Points won in the matches between the tied clubs
- Away goals scored in those head-to-head matches
- A playoff match, if it is still level
This is not a theoretical list. In 2011-12 Manchester City and Manchester United both finished on 89 points, and City took the title on goal difference, +64 to +56. The Premier League describes it as the only time goal difference has decided the championship.
How do promotion and relegation work?
The bottom three clubs, finishing 18th, 19th and 20th, drop to the Championship each season. Three clubs come up to replace them: the top two Championship sides go up automatically, and a third joins them through the playoffs, as the Premier League explains. The 2026-27 line-up shows the pattern. Coventry City won the Championship, Ipswich Town finished second and Hull City won the playoff final against Southampton, according to Flashscore.
The playoffs are changing from 2026-27. The EFL has expanded them from four teams to six, so clubs finishing third to eighth in the Championship now compete, according to Sky Sports. Sports Illustrated describes the format like this:
- Fifth plays eighth and sixth plays seventh, in single matches.
- The two winners then face the third and fourth-placed clubs in two-legged semi-finals.
- The semi-final winners meet in a one-off final at Wembley.
The EFL had not confirmed the playoff dates at the time of that report, only that the final will be played before the end of May 2027. The change gives clubs below the top four more to play for, and it means a team can reach the Premier League from as low as eighth place.
How do clubs qualify for Europe?
The table also decides who plays in European competition. The Premier League's European qualification guide sets out the standard route:
- Champions League: the top four clubs reach the league phase. A fifth place is awarded through the European Performance Spot when English clubs rank first or second in UEFA's association coefficient, which measures a country's results in Europe.
- Europa League: the fifth-placed club qualifies, or the sixth-placed club if the top five already include a Champions League place. The FA Cup winners also earn a league-phase place.
- Conference League: the EFL Cup winners enter at the playoff stage.
When a cup winner has already qualified through the table, the place passes to the next-highest club that has no European spot yet. That is why a cup final can change what a mid-table finish is worth. Winning a European trophy matters too: the Champions League and Europa League winners are guaranteed a place in the next Champions League, whatever their league position.
The 2026-27 season shows how this plays out. England has five clubs in the Champions League: Arsenal, Manchester City, Manchester United, Aston Villa and Liverpool, with the fifth place coming through the performance spot. Bournemouth, Sunderland and Crystal Palace are in the Europa League, and Brighton are in the Conference League, according to Flashscore. Why does the league keep stopping?
The Premier League runs from August into May, and it pauses several times for international windows. Clubs must release their players for national-team matches inside those windows, so the league schedules around them. In 2026-27, FIFA merged the old September and October windows into one 16-day block of up to four matches per team, so players leave their clubs once instead of twice, according to beIN SPORTS.
That leaves two more breaks that matter to English clubs: 9 to 17 November 2026 and 22 to 30 March 2027, per Fantasy Football Scout. A fourth window in June falls after the league season has finished.
The domestic cups fit in between, and, as covered above, they also feed European places.
How to follow a Premier League season
Once you know the rules, three things make a season easy to follow. First, the table. A live Premier League table with fixtures, results and top scorers shows who is above and below the European and relegation lines at any point in the season. Second, the gap between games played: a club with a game in hand is worth more than its position suggests. Third, the grounds. The place a match is played often shapes the occasion, from capacity to the journey in, and a matchday guide such as Stamford Bridge's capacity, away end and directions shows what a visiting fan should expect at one of the league's best-known grounds, which holds 40,341 seats.
