Sir Jim Ratcliffe would become the Premier League's fourth richest owner if successful in purchasing Manchester United.
Ratcliffe, who was born in Failsworth, Greater Manchester and who supported United growing up, had been the centre of speculation regarding a takeover bid at Old Trafford for years, but his desire to buy the club has now been made public for the first time.
“If the club is for sale, Jim is definitely a potential buyer,” a spokesperson for Ratcliffe told The Times on Wednesday night. “If something like this was possible, we would be interested in talking with a view to long-term ownership.

"This is not about the money that has been spent or not spent. Jim is looking at what can be done now and, knowing how important the club is to the city, it feels like the time is right for a reset."
Ratcliffe has an estimated worth of £10.8billion and that would make him the fourth richest owner in the Premier League.
Stan Kroenke at Arsenal has spent more than any other Premier League owner over the last two summers and Ratcliffe is worth more than the American. Ratcliffe is even known as Britain's richest man after founding Ineos chemicals group in 1998.
United have spent just £60m this summer and newly promoted Nottingham Forest have spent more.
