How police cracked cold case 40 years on from homophobic murder in London street

  • Brothers Michael and Anthony Stewart have been jailed for life for the 1984 murder of civil servant Anthony Littler in East Finchley, north London .

  • The victim, 45-year-old Anthony Littler, was ambushed and bludgeoned to death with a baseball bat-type weapon as he walked home from East Finchley Tube station.
  • The breakthrough in the cold case came 29 years after the murder when the brothers' younger sibling reported them, leading to a reopened investigation in 2022 using covert techniques.
  • The court heard the brothers had targeted lone men, whom they believed to be gay, for robbery and violence, with the judge noting they were 'lying in wait for a victim'.
