How Pedro Obiang and Roberto Mancini inspired Gianluca Scamacca’s West Ham arrival

West Ham United’s newest signing Gianluca Scamacca admits he received recommendations to move to the London Stadium from both Pedro Obiang and Roberto Mancini.

Scamacca signed for West Ham for an undisclosed fee earlier this week in a deal believed to be worth £30.5million and became the club’s fourth signing of the summer, following Alphonse Areola, Nayef Aguerd and Flynn Downes in moves to the London Stadium.

The 23-year-old moved to West Ham after five years with Sassuolo. However, he only made 41 appearances for them in all competitions, leaving on loan four times for short stints with Cremonese, PEC Zwolle, Ascoli and Genoa prior to his stellar stint with Sassuolo later term.

While in Serie A last season, Scamacca played alongside former Hammers midfielder and Equatorial Guinea international Pedro Obiang, who played 116 times for the Irons between 2017 and 2020 prior to swapping east London for Italy.

Speaking about talks with his former club colleague, Scamacca explained that Obiang, who scored three Premier League goals, speaks highly of his time at the London Stadium.

Speaking to West Ham’s club media, Scamacca said: “I know Pedro Obiang because we played together in Sassuolo and he was here and he speaks very, very well about the West Ham.”

Scamacca is a seven-time Italy international and his current national team boss Roberto Mancini guided Manchester City to their first Premier League title in dramatic circumstances in the 2011/12 season.

The Hammers’ newest signing sought advice from Mancini, who said that joining West Ham and the Premier League was the perfect place for the striker to continue his growth and development after a breakthrough 2021/22 campaign.

“We speak before I came here and he said it was a perfect place for me,” Scamacca added. “For growing up, for playing, for involvement, too get better and also, the Premier League is the best league.”

West Ham’s newest signing will hope to continue his rich vein of form in England’s top-flight this season. He could feature for the Hammers in their final friendly of pre-season against Lens on Saturday before playing host to Manchester City on the opening weekend of the season, where the Italian will aim to make his official debut for the club.
