How much will PCR tests cost now? All you need to know as Leo Varadkar announces major change

PCR tests will no longer be offered to the majority of people aged under 55, with the likes of 'walk-in' test centres being done away with from Monday.

Speaking in a briefing after a Cabinet meeting on Tuesday, (which you can watch above), the Tanaiste Leo Varadkar confirmed that tests will no longer be offered to people aged under 55 who are in good health, or people aged over 55 who have received a booster Covid vaccine.

There are some exceptions to the rule including pregnant women and those who live with an immunocompromised person.

That means that anyone who wants a Covid PCR test privately could have to fork out at least €60 for one.

Some companies offer tests for as high as €120.

The prices vary depending on how quickly you want or need your test results back.

Some countries still require a negative PCR test to gain entry across the continent.

You will no longer need a Covid-19 test if you have symptoms, unless you:

  • Are 55 or older and have not received a booster
  • Have a high-risk medical condition
  • Are immunocompromised
  • Live in the same household or provide care and support to someone who is immunocompromised
  • Are pregnant

Speaking to reporters straight after the Cabinet meeting gave the green light to axing most rules, Mr Varadkar said that four specific decisions were made, with the end of masks and the scrapping of Covid rules in schools and childcare settings the main ones.

Monday will now see the end of masks in schools, shops, workplaces and on public transport.

The law that made it illegal not to wear a mask has now been dropped and masks now only have to be worn in certain healthcare settings.
