Gareth Southgate will take his team to the 2022 Qatar World Cup this week knowing that he has to go one better than his last outing to finally be triumphant in a major tournament.
Having taken over the Three Lions on an interim basis following the farcical reign of Sam Allardyce, Southgate was given the job in a permanent capacity in November 2016 after remaining unbeaten in his four games in the temporary role. Fans were initially skeptical over the appointment due to his lack of experience in top-flight or elite football - but the Watford-born boss has proved a nation wrong since his inauguration into the hotseat.
A fourth-placed finish at the 2018 World Cup in Russia marked England's first semi-final and a first penalty shoot-out win in 22 years, giving fans confidence for Euro 2020. They went one step further in that, and even led in the final - though Italy's knowhow and penalty successes saw the Three Lions fall at the last hurdle.

Qatar 2022 is the tournament where England fans hope they can finally win a major trophy after over half a century with Southgate at the helm. But how much does the former Middlesbrough boss earn? football.london has all the details.
How much does Southgate get paid as England manager?
According to the Evening Standard, when Southgate signed his new contract in November 2021, he received a pay-rise from £3million per year to £5million with performance-related bonuses as a result of his strong performances on the international scene.
Of course, the Nations League won't have boosted that to any effect, though there is a confidence that Southgate can put the dour performances behind him on the international stage in a relatively easier group.
His contract runs until the end of 2024, meaning that should he produce another good performance in Qatar, he could be tasked with leading England to European glory in Germany that same summer.
