How much are Covid fines as Boris Johnson and Rishi Sunak punished for partygate?

Covid fines are making headlines as the PM and Chancellor of the Exchequer have been hit with fines for lockdown parties.

Boris Johnson and Rishi Sunak are undoubtedly two of the most high profile people to be slapped with Covid fines since the pandemic started.

The partygate scandal has led to the PM and his wife, Carrie Johnson, being fined for attending a birthday party during the first lockdown.

The Metropolitan Police announced an 30 additional fines had been issued on Tuesday in relation to Operation Hillman, which is looking into breaches of Covid regulations at the top of Government, Wales Online reported.

Police have opted not to name those facing fines, citing traditional practices when dealing with out-of-court matters such as speeding fines.

However, Downing Street said it would confirm if Mr Johnson was among those being penalised and has done so.

A No 10 spokeswoman said: "The Prime Minister and Chancellor of the Exchequer have today received notification that the Metropolitan police intend to issue them with fixed penalty notices."

During the pandemic, a number of new laws were approved by Parliament which were enforceable with fixed penalty notices.

As lockdowns continued and were lifted, more laws were introduced giving the police and officials powers to issue fines to those breaching the rules.
