How Melanie Sykes and Strictly star get buff on a luxury island fitness resort

A British couple have traded their manic lives in London to rub shoulders with celebrities on Spanish islands at luxury fitness resorts.

For most of us, January is either a month of going vegan, not drinking and heading through the frost to the local gym, or curling up on the sofa and shutting the dark nights out with an extra portion of dinner.

If you are a celebrity or one of the high powered financiers who attends luxury fitness camps like 38 Degrees North, then it's a little easier to find inspiration.

Increasingly the rich and famous are heading abroad to build up their tans and work out on the beach, while being pampered in five star hotels.

Couple Claire and James have welcomed thousands of fitness enthusiasts to their camps held across the Balearic Islands since 2012, having given up on the London rat race to find a different way to live.

"Most of our people are entrepreneurs or at the senior board level," James told The Mirror.

"We've also had Melanie Sykes, Georgie Porter, Ashley Roberts from the Pussy Cat Dolls, and Lucy Mecklenburg.

"Last year we trained Neil Jones, who is one of the strictly professionals. We had to get him ready for Strictly.

"We were looking at improving his overall body condition, because his fitness and cardio was already there.

"Mel loved it, she was great fun, we did boxing and paddle boarding boarding."

The 38 Degrees North Camp is held in different hotels from season to season, with previous venues including Me in Ibiza.

The next will be held at Puente Romano Marbella, which boasts a Six Senses luxury spa, food provided by Michelin Starred Dani Garcia, a full gym and tennis club, and exclusive access to a Mediterranean beach.

"The current hotel we're working in is amazing, it's really understated luxury, right on the beach front in a green area," James continued.

"It is modelled on a traditional Andalusian villa."

Over the course of three days guests are launched into an intense workout and clean living regime.

"It starts with the sunrise session when we go down to the beach to do a short high intensity interval training session, just 15 to 20 minutes to wake your body up," James said.

"It's a really helpful way to manage body fat. Then we stretch out and go for a breakfast.

"After that we have a short break and go into a workshop, usually it'll be about habits or demystifying nutrition.

"Then we might go to hotel gym and teach people how to use weights, or do boxing circuits on the beach.

"Then its lunch, another workshop, and then another active session where we'll bring it down with stretching or yoga."

In the evenings guests are free to go and explore the island.

While most people enjoy a dip in the sea or a spot of dinner, others decide to make the most of Ibiza's reputation.

"Some people disappear off to pasha and then turn up quite pale the next day," James said.

A three day break with 38 Degrees North costs between £2,000 and £3,000, which includes everything but travel.

When it comes to those who can't afford to make the trip but are looking to get in shape at the moment, James offered the following advice.

"It's great to have motivation, it's what gets you started at new year, but it wains over time," he said.

"You have to dial in discipline, take small steps forward every day. We live in an age where everyone is looking for a quick miracle fix.

"It's a lot less glamorous than that. It will get you results over time. Make sure your goal isn't too overwhelming.

"Just take small steps."
