  • Welsh actor Matthew Rhys has made Emmy history by becoming the first male performer to win in all three lead acting categories at the awards.
  • At the 78th annual Emmy Awards at the Peacock Theatre in Los Angeles, the 51-year-old secured two best lead actor awards in a single evening.
  • His victories included best lead actor in a limited series for Netflix's thriller The Beast in Me and best lead comedy actor for Apple TV's Widow's Bay .
  • Together with his 2018 lead drama win for The Americans , he is the first male performer to win in all three lead acting categories. Rhys used his acceptance speech to thank his family and pay tribute to Wales as a small but mighty nation.
  • Speaking backstage while holding both trophies, Rhys declared that his celebrations following the landmark double win would be long, varied, and wild.
