How many Wimbledon courts have a roof and what happens if rain stops play?

The Wimbledon Championships’ second day of play was halted by rain, leaving many spectators waiting in their rain gear for play to continue.

After only approximately an hour of play on the outdoor courts – and after a whole lot of time spent in the queue – viewers and attendees were told the matches outside Centre Court and Court 1 would be abandoned owing to the arrival of rain.

The All England Club will have to pay, but they'll undoubtedly count on their trusty insurance to cover it.

The tournament reports that a total of 69 matches, including those that began and those that were carried over from Monday, were cancelled on Tuesday.

It means that today’s schedule will be packed, with almost half of the first-round matches across the men’s and women’s singles draws still to be played.

How many Wimbledon courts have a roof?

Only two courts have retractable concertina roofs at Wimbledon.

The first one is at Centre Court, which saw match play for the first time in 2009, with the second roof over No1 Court revealed in 2019. They have been built to avoid rain stopping play.

Every event is played outside, therefore the weather might affect the game like it did yesterday.

The majority of games in Courts 2 and 3 were cancelled yesterday. The cost of admission to Courts 2 and 3 is £46; grounds passes are £27. Court 2 will spend £18,400 on refunds alone because it is Wimbledon's third-largest exhibition court and has a capacity of 4,000.

What happens if rain stops play and you have a grounds ticket?

You will receive an email from the LTA clarifying the steps you will need to follow and the amount of credit you will receive back to your LTA Tickets account if play is postponed due to bad weather conditions on the day of your event.

Some refunds are calculated using the referee’s record of how much play has taken place on any given day.
