How EA imbued Immortals of Aveum’s Sigils with FPS magic

EA’s Immortals of Aveum puts a fresh spin on the usual first-person shooter setup. Gone are the shotguns and automatics, and in their place are Sigils, enigmatic objects you strap to your wrist that fire different magical projectiles depending on what color the Sigil is affiliated with. Jak, the hero of Aveum, wields a special power as a Triarch Magnus that lets him use all three Sigils.

Each Sigil grants power with a certain kind of magic. Blue is for precise attacks that hit exactly where you want them to. Red has a tendency to explode and must be handled with caution, and green magic draws on spiritual energy to let the wielder unleash rapid-fire attacks and overwhelm foes.

Immortals of Aveum doesn’t have the detailed, lovingly crafted gun models you get in most modern games, even Starfield. However, the team at EA put a similar level of care and attention into Jak’s fantastical toolset and added an extra layer of worldbuilding in the Sigil design, which you can get a glimpse of in our video below.

Blue Sigils look like carefully crafted surgical instruments, in keeping with their emphasis on precision. Red’s jagged edges and harsh design scream “You’ll hurt yourself if you’re not careful,” which you absolutely will, and Green lives up to its nature as the spiritual energy of the world.

Sigils in Aveum consist of three parts. The first is the base, which attaches to the Sigil Plate and sits on your arm. Jak’s arm. Well, it’s essentially the same thing. Anyway, the next bit is the bezel, the part that holds the crystal corresponding to the magic you’re using. Finally is the tip at the end, which directs the magic where you want it to go.

Check out the video below for an exclusive teardown of the devices. Immortals of Aveum is available now on PC, PS5, and Xbox Series X|S.
