How DWP benefits to be impacted as bank holidays confirmed for 2022 and 2023

With just a number of weeks remaining for 2022, the bank holidays for 2023 have been confirmed.

Bank holidays are a national public holiday and they are usually spread out across the calendar. They include seasonal events such as Christmas, Easter and the New Year. Although they can sometimes impact benefit payments, so it's worth being prepared and making a note of the dates.

Depending on the holiday and the reason, some shops can close, as do schools, banks and some businesses.

As there is not too long left of 2022, there are only two bank holidays left around the festive period.

Because Christmas lands on a Sunday this year, we get a 'substitute' day in the week instead. As Boxing Day, which is also a bank holiday, is on a Monday it means the substitute Christmas bank holiday will be on Tuesday, December 27.

This will allow individuals, businesses and other organisations in Scotland to celebrate the Coronation.

When will DWP benefits be paid?

Benefits are typically paid on the nearest working day beforehand if the date falls on a weekend or bank holiday. This means any Universal Credit amounts, which are fixed to the same date each month, normally due on December 24, 25, 26 or 27 should be paid on Friday December 23, instead.

Everyone who claims benefits will also receive a one-off Christmas bonus this year. The tax-free sum of £10 will be paid automatically alongside your regular benefits.
