If you've ever seen and enjoyed the ITV hit series Doc Martin starring Martin Clunes and Caroline Catz, which is currently filming the new tenth series due to air in autumn 2022 and ending with a Christmas special, you will have seen the main property star of the show, Fern Cottage.
The location for Doctor Martin Ellingham's surgery and home, the property has been the pretty backdrop for all the drama of medical emergencies, village locals arriving with the strangest of ailments, and a stray dog constantly rushing through the front door to try and set up home inside and promptly being carried back out by Doc Martin.
For fans of the show the cottage is instantly recognisable, perched on the steep hill that overlooks the gorgeous harbour at Port Isaac, Cornwall. It's a special house with a special view but as the new series is said to be the last series it might be the last time we see it on our screens.
Used as a holiday let in recent times, Doc Martin's house is now for sale for a cool £1.25m. But it is not the house that maybe you think you are buying.
There's no doctor's room with the low door beam that the Doc usually hits his head on. You won't find a packed waiting room with receptionist Morwenna, played by Jessica Ransom, trying to control the patients, the cottage has not been renovated to create an open-plan kitchen diner and lounge that has seen many dramatic scenes between the Doc and wife Louisa, played by Caroline Catz.
Anyone who has visited the village and strolled up the hill to Fern Cottage and been a bit naughty, as it is private property, and snuck a view inside via the windows and letterbox might have been surprised to see it is totally different. Not everyone is aware that the inside of Doc Martin's house and surgery is actually filmed in a studio nearby.
But no-one should be disappointed because inside Doc Martin's TV house for sale there is a stunning cottage that oozes tasteful decor, cottage character and one of the most breath-taking coastal village views in Cornwall, if not the UK, with the clear blue water of the Atlantic ocean the best of neighbours.
Inside the cottage, where the Doc's waiting room is located in the programme, is a much more tranquil space, dedicated to relaxing and looking out at the view, socialising and watching TV - surely the new series of Doc Martin is a must on this TV screen?
There is no doorway to the Doc's room here, the cottage is only two rooms deep, so wander into the room on the other side of the central stairway and a charming dining room packed full of character welcomes you with an exposed stone chimney breast and log burner in the fireplace.
Add in a flagstone floor, exposed beams and white-washed stone walls and the interiors are classic cottage. The room has not just a window to the wonderful sea, cliff and village view but also a door out to the side terrace and this room is surely the gem of the property.
The door leads to either the tiered rear garden or the raised front terrace. Imagine sitting out on this elevated front veranda watching the sun set over the ocean or enjoying breakfast with the sound of seagulls and lapping waves your daily soundtrack.
The village is a busy and popular holiday destination for people staying at one of the holiday lets nestled within the delightful and tiny lanes that wind through the historic heart of the village of mainly fishermen's cottages.
The estate agent states that the cottage is a very successful holiday let and is offered for sale with all forward bookings. But if this amazing abode becomes your full-time home, and why wouldn't you want to live here, be prepared for total strangers stopping on the lane as they wander up to the coastal path and taking photos of your famous TV house.
Back into the cottage and the dining room leads to a kitchen with Shaker-style units, wooden work surfaces and cute window that looks out over the hillside foliage.
Up the central stairs there are two double bedrooms either side of the landing, located above the two reception rooms, and both can boast beautiful interior design.
The bedroom above the dining room continues the exposed stone chimney breast feature and can add an outstanding sea view directly from the pillow as well as from a bonus side window.
Move the chest of drawers currently located in that corner and replace it with a squishy armchair and this dual aspect area of the room would make the most inviting of reading nooks, framed by two remarkable views that are better than any artwork.
The second bedroom sits above the lounge and can offer views to the rear hillside as well as the sea and harbour view at the front. There's a handy additional sink in this bedroom but the full bathroom can be found at the back of the property, above the kitchen.
As you might expect from this sophisticated, stylish and yet overwhelmingly welcoming cottage, the bathroom has been afforded beautiful interior design that centres around the feature roll-top bath.
Fern Cottage has parking for two cars and is literally a minute's walk from the village harbour, the platt, and down onto the beach. There are also a number of craft and souvenir shops and the maze of wonderful character properties to discover.
The village offers a variety of eateries that ranges from pub grub at The Golden Lion to a tasty meal at The Old School Hotel & Restaurant, who also do take away, and the outside of which was used as the primary school where Louisa worked as a teacher.
Loved by millions of viewers across the world as Portwenn in the series, Port Isaac is a unique and utterly charming village that also includes two Nathan Outlaw restaurants.
It is also the birthplace of The Fisherman's Friends, who used to do free concerts on the platt during the summer to raise money for local charities, but have sadly had to stop when they became so popular they were attracting thousands of people to the village to watch the gig by the sea, and totally overwhelming it.
If you have the budget of £1.25m to spend and want a house that is truly unique regarding its location, its views and its TV fame, then Fern Cottage is a wonderful option - and surely Doc Martin would agree?
