How and where to vote in South Australia's election as polls open

Masks will be mandatory at polling booths and voters are encouraged to bring their own pencils under COVID-safe measures. (ABC News)

More than 1.26 million South Australians are expected to vote in today's election, a record number according to the Electoral Commission of SA.

The election will be SA's first since the pandemic began, and COVID-safe measures have been introduced to keep voters safe at the polls and also allow isolating South Australians to vote.

If you have not already voted at a pre-poll centre or registered for a postal vote, you will need to vote in person today.

Here's everything you need to know before you head to the polls.

Where can I vote?

Booths will be open from 8:00am until 6:00pm.

Find your nearest voting centre here, including accessible venues and places with staff that speak languages other than English.

You can vote at a centre outside your electorate, such as a centre close to your work.

However, the Electoral Commission of SA advises that voting outside your electoral district may take longer because you'll need to cast a declaration vote.

Who can I vote for?

The full list of candidates for the House of Assembly and the Legislative Council are available on the Electoral Commission of SA website.

The two major parties are the Liberal party, led by Steven Marshall, and Labor, led by Peter Malinauskas.

This election will be the first since changes were made to the boundaries of the state's electoral districts, meaning some people will be voting in different electorates than they did at the last election.

How do I vote?

When you arrive at the voting centre, you will be given two ballot papers: a green paper for the House of Assembly and a white paper for the Legislative Council.

On the green House of Assembly ballot paper, number every square in the order of your choice.

On the white Legislative Council ballot paper, you can either vote above the red line, for political parties or groups, or below the red line, for individual candidates.

If you vote above the red line, number the squares in the order of your choice.

You don't need to number every square. Leave the rest of the ballot blank.

If you vote below the red line, number the squares in the order of your choice.

You need to choose at least 12 candidates, but you can continue to number as many as you like after that.

How do I vote if I'm in quarantine?

If you have tested positive, are a close contact or waiting for a PCR test result, you cannot go to a voting centre.

Instead, you can register to collect a ballot paper from a testing station, including PCR sites or rapid antigen collection points.

How often are South Australian elections?

SA elections are held every four years and are always held on the third Saturday in March.

The last election, won by the Liberal party, was in 2018.

Today South Australians will elect members to the 55th parliament.

All 47 seats in the lower house, the House of Assembly, as well as half the seats in the upper house, the Legislative Council, are up for election.

Voting is compulsory in South Australia, and you could receive a $70 fine for not voting without a valid reason.

When will we know the result?

We may not know the result on Saturday night.

Pre-poll and postal votes will be counted on Monday after the election, and Electoral Commissioner Mick Sherry has said he expects a record number of people to vote early this year due to the pandemic.

"If we do have a significant increase in declaration votes, there is a good chance that we may not know the results in some electoral districts — and possibly the election itself — until several days after polling day," he said.
