When Americans go to vote on 3rd November 2026 for the midterm elections, they will be choosing members of Congress as well as governors, state lawmakers and local officials in different parts of the country.
But unlike in India, where the elections are primarily conducted by a central independent body namely the Election Commission of India, the US does not have an unified national voting system. Rather, states and sometimes counties and local election authorities frame out the rules around registration, voter identification, early voting and postal ballots.
