How a photographer on an unplanned dive swam into a mass of sardines and captured this breathtaking, ethereal image

A lone freediver hovers in a shaft of light at the centre of a vast, swirling school of sardines that curves around her like a dark tunnel.

When you first glance at this underwater image, it looks like the kind of shot that would take weeks to plan. In fact, the photograph was taken during an unplanned morning dive. No script, no moodboard, no dive team briefing. Just a freediver, an expanse of open water and a huge school of sardines.

The result: a churning mass of silver folds itself into a perfect halo around its human subject. No surprise, then, that Ben Yávar's image is a finalist in this year's Ocean Photographer of the Year Adventure category.
