Houthi Rebels Target U.S. Ships And Drones In Yemen

Rebels in Yemen launched another round of missiles and drones in the Red Sea and Gulf of Aden on Monday, targeting vessels in the region. Two U.S. commercial ships were hit in the attacks, escalating tensions in the area. The attacks have been increasing since the beginning of the Israel-Hamas conflict.

The Houthis, backed by Iran, are not only targeting ships but also engaging in military actions against other assets. A U.S. official confirmed that a Houthi missile likely shot down a U.S. MQ-9 Reaper drone in Yemen, marking the second time such an incident has occurred.

The MQ-9 Reaper drone is a crucial asset used for intelligence, surveillance, reconnaissance, and strike missions. The Houthis claimed to have shot down the drone using what they described as a suitable missile.

Multiple commercial vessels, including U.S.-owned ships and a U.K.-owned bulk carrier, were targeted in the attacks, with some sustaining minor damage. The crew of the U.K.-owned vessel had to be rescued following the strike.

In response to the escalating attacks, the U.S. and other forces intercepted and shot down a total of 10 one-way attack drones launched from Houthi territory in Yemen. The U.S. has conducted multiple strikes on Houthi weapons in Yemen to counter the threat posed by the rebel group.

The situation highlights the challenge faced by the U.S. in assessing the extent of Houthi weaponry and the ongoing threat to shipping in one of the world's most critical waterways. The continued attacks underscore the volatile nature of the conflict in the region and the need for heightened vigilance and security measures.
