Households are being given supermarket vouchers for increasing their step count

Supermarket vouchers are being given to people who increase their daily step count through a new Government shame.

Other rewards you can get through the new initiative, which is designed to encourage healthier lifestyles, include cinema tickets and clothing.

The new pilot scheme launched last Friday and is being tested in Wolverhampton. The Better Health: Rewards app is free to download for over-18s.

For the next 20 weeks, users of the app collect points for completing personalised weekly goals such as increasing their step count or eating more fruit and vegetables.

People are able to track this through a fitness tracker watch which they get after signing up to the scheme.

The Government has given £3million worth of funding for the incentives as says "hundreds" of rewards will be available.

Participating supermarkets and retailers include:

  • Aldi
  • Tesco
  • Sainsbury
  • Asda
  • Amazon
  • Argos
  • Primark
  • M&S
  • John Lewis
  • Currys

Gyms and leisure centres in Wolverhampton, including PureGym, Places Leisure, Complexions and WV Active across, are also offering vouchers and discounts as part of the scheme.

The Better Health scheme website says you can earn at least £40 worth of vouchers by taking part.

The scheme is being delivered by the Office for Health Improvement and Disparities in partnership with Wolverhampton City Council.

Overall, the aim of the scheme is to improve the health and well-being of the public and to help reduce obesity in the general population.

Secretary of State for Health and Social Care Steve Barclay said: "The pilot is an opportunity to explore how we can further harness technology to support people to improve their physical health, prevent illnesses before they develop and help to ease pressure on the NHS.

"I would encourage all adults in Wolverhampton to download the app today to improve their well-being and start earning exciting rewards."

If you live in Wolverhampton and would like to take part in the scheme, you can download the Better Health: Rewards app through the app store.

As it is a trial, the app is only available to download between February 17 and March 31 2023.
