House To Send Impeachment Articles Against Mayorkas To Senate

U.S. Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas arrives to testify before the Senate Appropriations committee

The House of Representatives has announced that it will send impeachment articles against Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas to the Senate next week. This decision comes after Senate Republicans requested more time to make their case for a full trial, as Democrats are expected to swiftly dismiss the articles at the beginning of the trial.

A spokesperson for House Speaker Mike Johnson stated that the House wants to ensure the Senate has adequate time to fulfill its constitutional duty. Initially planned for Wednesday, the transmission of the articles will now take place next week to allow for a more comprehensive discussion in the Senate.

Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer reiterated that Democrats are committed to handling the impeachment process as expeditiously as possible. Despite the delay, Schumer affirmed that they are prepared to proceed whenever the articles are sent over.

Senator John Kennedy revealed that Senate Republicans had requested Speaker Johnson to delay sending the articles until Monday to provide ample time for discussions. Senate Republican Whip John Thune explained that some members of the Senate are seeking a delay to allow for more thorough debates and potential votes on related issues.

While the decision ultimately rests with Speaker Johnson, Thune acknowledged that Senate Republicans have been in communication with the House regarding the matter. The intention remains to send the articles to the Senate next week, but discussions are ongoing about the timing and process of the impeachment trial.
