Speaker Mike Johnson, R-La., has indicated that the House of Representatives will be taking action in the coming weeks to secure additional funding for Ukraine. Johnson mentioned in an interview with Fox News that upon their return from the current recess, the House will be introducing a new national security and foreign aid package with significant innovations.
During the two-week recess, lawmakers are working in their home districts, with the House scheduled to reconvene on April 9. Johnson stated that efforts are underway to build consensus on the aid package, which will differ from previous attempts. The proposed $95 billion package has been a subject of debate, with Republicans pushing for border measures and Democrats advocating for a slimmer package without such provisions.
Regarding aid to Ukraine, Johnson highlighted three key proposals. The first involves the REPO Act, which aims to provide assistance to Ukraine by liquidating seized Russian assets. Another proposal, suggested by former President Trump, involves offering aid in the form of a loan, with repayment contingent on Ukraine's success in the conflict with Russia. The third proposal focuses on leveraging American energy resources, particularly natural gas exports, to undermine Putin's war efforts in Ukraine.
As bipartisan pressure mounts for increased aid to Ukraine, Johnson faces criticism from some within his party, including Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene, who opposes further funding for Ukraine. Despite internal dissent, Johnson remains committed to addressing the escalating crisis in Ukraine and is in discussions with colleagues to advance the aid package.
