House Republicans vote for impeachment of Alejandro Mayorkas

In a closely watched move, the impeachment of Alejandro Mayorkas, the Secretary of Homeland Security, now hinges on the math. It is anticipated that two House Republicans, Ken Buck of Colorado and Tom McClintock of California, will vote against the impeachment.

McClintock, expressing his reservations, argues that Republicans are pushing the boundaries of impeachment. He notes that this approach goes against the principles established by the American founders, who specifically rejected the idea of political disputes leading to impeachment. This assertion implies that political disagreements alone cannot be grounds for removing an official from office.

Critics of the impeachment proceedings assert that replacing one left-wing official with another will not address the ongoing border crisis effectively. The vote on Mayorkas's impeachment appears to be hanging by a thread. Marjorie Taylor Greene has called on McClintock to 'grow some courage' and read the room before making a decision on impeachment. If the House votes in favor of impeachment, Greene will represent the House in a Senate trial for Mayorkas.

While Democrats argue that policy differences cannot be the basis for impeachment, some Republicans contend that the issue goes beyond mere policy disagreements. They claim that breaking the law is more than a policy difference, citing the loss of 300 Americans every day due to fentanyl poisoning as a form of murder.

In addition, some speculate that Republicans are using Mayorkas's impeachment as a proxy for their previous impeachment inquiry into President Biden. Adam Schiff, who led the first impeachment of former President Trump, is associated with this theory. Critics argue that the Republican Party, with no notable accomplishments in their 14 months in power, is resorting to yet another impeachment resolution, this time unable to provide concrete evidence against President Biden.

It is worth noting that the House has not impeached a cabinet secretary in 148 years. If the House does vote in favor of impeachment, the Senate will be required to commence an impeachment trial. However, it is not expected that any Democrats will vote in favor of impeaching Mayorkas.

As the impeachment proceedings unfold, the nation waits to see whether the math proves sufficient to remove Mayorkas from his position as Secretary of Homeland Security.
