A group of House Republicans has called on President Biden to take swift action to secure the release of U.S. citizens being held hostage by Hamas terrorists. The lawmakers emphasized Israel's right to self-defense and urged the administration to support Israel in its fight against Hamas.
The letter, signed by Rep. Russell Fry and 15 GOP lawmakers, highlighted the recent attack by Hamas fighters that resulted in the deaths of approximately 1,200 people and the abduction of over 250 individuals, including five American citizens.
The lawmakers expressed concern over the well-being of the hostages, citing reports of severe abuse and calling for their safe return. They urged the White House to align with Israel and avoid actions that could embolden Hamas.
In addition to advocating for the release of the hostages, the lawmakers called on the U.S. to use its influence to pressure Qatar to stop supporting Hamas. They emphasized the importance of standing with Israel and ensuring its ability to defend itself against threats in the region.
Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin reaffirmed the U.S.' support for Israel during a conversation with Israeli Defense Minister Yoav Gallant. The Pentagon reiterated its commitment to Israel's security and stated that the U.S. remains in close contact with Israel amid ongoing threats from Iran and its proxies.
