- Will pick up right after last season's finale

- Fourth and final season will wrap up its story

House of the Dragon season 3 is less than five months from release. Indeed, with the Game of Thrones prequel show set to return to our screens sometime in June, it won't be long until fire reigns once more.

Before House of the Dragon's third season makes its bow, you'll want to read up on the biggest and latest news about it. Below, I've rounded up the most important details on its next chapter, including its first trailer, cast, story details, and the HBO TV Original's future post-season 3. So, saddle up, dragonrider, and let's take to the skies together to learn more.

House of the Dragon season 3 release date prediction

As I mentioned above, House of the Dragon season 3 will premiere this June. What date it'll air on, though, hasn't been publicly announced.

Prior to that announcement, we knew House of the Dragon would not only return for a third season, but also that House of the Dragon season 3 would come out sometime this year. Late last year, HBO shortened that release window down to mid-2026. Hopefully, it won't be much longer until a specific date in June is confirmed.

House of the Dragon season 3 trailer

After its first footage was teased in HBO Max's 2026 preview video, this season's first trailer was released in late February.

Running for just over a minute, the teaser confirmed that season 3 will be far more action-packed than its predecessor was, with the next eight episodes showing even more carnage and bloodshed as the Dance of the Dragons kicks into gear. House of the Dragon season 3 story speculation

Season 3 should do what its forebear didn't: be full of big and violent action sequences (Image credit: HBO)

Full spoilers follow for House of the Dragon season 2. Potentially big spoilers also follow for Fire and Blood and House of the Dragon season 3.

House of the Dragon 3's official plot brief hasn't been revealed yet. However, those who've read Fire and Blood, the tome penned by Game of Thrones author George R.R. Martin that covers the Targaryen Civil War, already know what's to come. Meanwhile, based on how last season ended and the first teaser for season 3, we have a good sense of what it'll entail.

You can remind yourself what happened in last season's finale by reading my House of the Dragon season 2 ending explained piece. For here on out, though, potentially big spoilers immediately follow for House of the Dragon season 3. Skip to the next section if you don't want anything ruined ahead of time.

This season will open with a major battle sequence known as The Battle of the Gullet (Image credit: HBO Max)

For starters, this season's premiere will make up for its forebear's lack of big-scale battles with a major skirmish known as The Battle of the Gullet, which will be one of "four major events... in season 3", showrunner Ryan Condal told Entertainment Weekly.

Originally, this was supposed to bring down the curtain on season 2, but it was pushed into its follow-up due to production costs and the need for more development time.

"That event will happen very shortly," Condal previously admitted (per ScreenRant). "It should be the biggest thing to date that we've pulled off, and we just wanted to have the time and the space to do that at a level that is going to excite and satisfy the fans in the way it deserves. And, we also wanted to build some anticipation towards it.

"The show is so complex that we're really making multiple feature films every season, so I apologize for the wait. But, I will just say, if Rook's Rest and the Red Sowing are any indication, the team that we have together, we're going to pull off a hell of a win with The Battle of the Gullet."

House of the Dragon season 3 will be as much a heart-breaking affair as its forebears were (Image credit: HBO Max)

There'll be plenty more human and dragon deaths alike in season 3, too — that much is to be expected in adaptations of Martin's works — but I'll refrain from spoiling them here.

In fact, there's the potential that characters who die in Fire and Blood might not do so in its TV retelling. The same is also true of events that could play out in House of the Dragon 3. The reason? A huge falling out between Condal and Martin that happened during season 2's development.

In September 2024, an evidently frustrated Martin took to his personal blog to slam Condal's decision to change key storylines in season 2, which led to Condal hithing back at Martin's criticisms about House of the Dragon season 2 last April. Since then, it's become abundantly clear that their working relationship is irreparable, with Martin calling it "abysmal" and "worse than rocky" (per The Hollywood Reporter).

With Martin also teasing the prospect that seasons 3 and 4 will similarly divert from the source material via the aforementioned blog post (per Variety), fans of the show and long-time Thrones devotees should prepare themselves for even more character- and story-based changes. In short: even for Fire and Blood readers, it's hard to say what will happen next season without knowing which plot threads Condal and company have tweaked for the purposes of television.

Has House of the Dragon season 4 been announced yet?

Yes — and it'll be the high fantasy series' final installment, too.

Last November, House of the Dragon season 4 was not only announced as part of myriad TV shows renewed for another outing by HBO, but also that it would premiere sometime in 2028. At the time, it was unclear if the program would continue after its fourth season, but HBO boss Casey Bloys has since confirmed (per Deadline) that House of the Dragon will come to a close in two years' time.

Of course, there's always the possibility that more seasons could be made at a much later date. Martin has regularly discussed his wish to write Fire and Blood Part 2, which would cover more of House Targaryen's history from their viewpoint.

However, it's highly unlikely that Fire and Blood volume 2 will ever be penned, let alone turned into more seasons of House of the Dragon. Indeed, Martin is currently consulting on season 2 of another Thrones spin-off in A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms, is still yet to finish the seventh Thrones novel 'The Winds of Winter', and is helping to get other TV and stage play Thrones projects off the ground. Long story short: don't hold your breath over House of the Dragon season 5 seeing the light of day.
