House Homeland Security Committee debates impeachment of DHS Secretary

Christopher Wray Homeland Security House Homeland Security Committee hearing examining worldwide threats to the U.S., in Washington

Article: The House Homeland Security Committee is moving forward with the impeachment process for U.S. Cabinet Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas. In a hearing, Chairman Mark Green accused their Democrat colleagues of refusing to attend round table discussions on the border crisis, claiming they were burying their heads in the sand and ignoring the severity of the situation. Green emphasized the importance of their numerous hearings, where they heard from various witnesses including former senior DHS enforcement officials, state's attorneys general, and victims affected by Secretary Mayorkas' handling of the border crisis.

The Republican committee members have consistently faced criticism from Democrats, who dismissed their efforts as a waste of time. However, Green pointed out the devastating toll the crisis has taken, citing the deaths of 150,000 Americans due to fentanyl poisoning in 2021 and 2022 alone. He mentioned that their requests for information from the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) had been met with stonewalling and mockery from Democrats.

To illustrate the gravity of the situation, Green highlighted instances where Democrats labeled committee hearings as a sham and dismissed the testimonies of grieving mothers who had lost their children to fentanyl poisoning and crimes committed by illegal immigrants. He stressed that these victims and their families deserved serious attention and respect.

Addressing accusations that the impeachment process was rushed, Green countered that their investigation had been thorough and meticulous. He emphasized the seriousness with which Republicans approached the use of impeachment and expressed pride in the work his colleagues had put into their five-phase investigation. The phases included documenting laws, court orders, and rulings that Secretary Mayorkas disregarded, uncovering the enrichment of drug cartels due to his policies, and highlighting the human costs of the border crisis.

In response to Green's statements, Ranking Member Benny Thompson argued that no official in American history had ever been convicted after impeachment for refusing to follow the law. Thompson claimed that Republicans were attempting to re-litigate their cases through impeachment after losing in court. He stated that Secretary Mayorkas had not violated the Constitution or committed any impeachable offense. Thompson defended Mayorkas's implementation of the administration's border policies and criticized Republicans for ignoring the facts and misrepresenting the law.

Thompson further accused House Republicans of accomplishing nothing with the impeachment, citing their lack of action on legislation to provide necessary resources to the Department of Homeland Security. He claimed that if Republicans were serious about improving conditions at the border, they would negotiate border security legislation with the White House and the Senate. Thompson concluded by criticizing House Republicans for hindering progress and lacking seriousness in addressing the border crisis.

The impeachment process for Secretary Mayorkas is being closely watched, as the outcome could potentially hinge on the slim margin of two votes in the Republican-controlled House.
