House Democrats Consider Investigating Trump If They Win Majority

Florida Democratic Party Chair Nikki Fried, center, speaks during a Biden-Harris 2024 campaign news conference, Tuesday, Nov. 7, 2023, in Miami. The event coincides with the third GOP primary debate i

House Democrats are considering the possibility of investigating former President Donald Trump if they secure the House majority in November. Representatives Richard Neal and Jamie Raskin did not rule out probing Trump if he wins the White House. Neal, who led the probe into Trump's tax returns in the last Congress, mentioned that the recent Supreme Court decision expanding presidential immunity could impact their decision.

Raskin expressed a preference for focusing on the future but emphasized the importance of doing their job. He criticized House Republicans for prioritizing impeachment investigations over critical issues like gun violence and prescription drug costs.

Other Democratic representatives, Eric Swalwell and Dan Goldman, suggested that investigations into Trump's family and business dealings may be warranted even if he loses the election. They specifically mentioned Jared Kushner's business deals, including a significant investment from a fund led by Saudi Arabian Crown Prince Mohammad bin Salman.

Goldman highlighted the need for checks and balances on Trump, especially if he wins a second term. He criticized the lack of investigation into Kushner's financial dealings and emphasized the importance of holding the former president accountable.

Trump's campaign spokeswoman dismissed the Democrats' intentions, labeling them as part of a 'Trump Derangement Syndrome' within the Democratic Party. The ongoing investigations into Trump during this Congress could provide insight into potential probes in a second Trump term.

While the Oversight Committee under Chairman James Comer has focused on investigating President Biden and his family, Democrats are considering revisiting investigations into Trump if they regain the majority. Comer defended his committee's focus on government mismanagement and denied that their inquiries into Trump were politically motivated.

If Trump wins, Democrats are expected to intensify their scrutiny of his administration, potentially leading to further investigations and clashes between the two parties.
